What Should You Look for When Hiring an In-house Accountant or Bookkeeper?

In a recent teleconference with Frank Ross, he was asked for advice on what to look for when hiring an in-house accountant or bookkeeper. Here is how Frank responded to that question:

Desired Qualities for a Bookkeeper/Controller:

  • Commonsense – We can teach accounting, but we cannot teach commonsense. They probably won’t know your business, so you will have to teach them about that.
  • Communicator – This person will need to be able to communicate how the business is performing to operations, sales, estimating and pricing. He or she should be a facilitator who can take the budget and update it and continually modify the plan based upon performance throughout the year.
  • Ability to Learn New Concepts in Financial Management – the accounting taught in schools is taught for manufacturing, not the service industry, which sells labor.
